The oldest known pottery vessels, from Xianrendong Cave in China, are about 20,000 years old — ice-age hunter-gatherers were firing cooking pots roughly ten thousand years before anyone on Earth farmed.
Clay shaped by hand and hardened in fire — among the first materials humans transformed permanently into a new, durable substance, giving them sealed vessels that could store food and, above all, boil it.
Fire hot enough to harden clay gave us sealed vessels — to boil, to store clean — and, pushed hotter still, something clearer.

When a trading ship sank off Uluburun, Turkey, around 1320 BC, its cargo included some 175 ingots of raw colored glass. Within about two centuries of the first glass vessels, raw glass was already a bulk export commodity of Bronze Age empires.
Sand melted with a flux of soda or plant ash until it fuses into a transparent solid — shapeable while hot, rigid and chemically inert forever after.
Melt sand into glass and you get a material you can see THROUGH. For three thousand years nobody guessed it would one day reveal why we die.

We can date eyeglasses to about 1286 because of a sermon: in 1306 the friar Giordano da Pisa told a Florence congregation that "it is not yet twenty years since there was found the art of making spectacles," adding that he had personally met the man who first made them.
Glass ground into curved surfaces that bend light to a focus — correcting aging eyes, and, stacked in tubes, revealing worlds too far or too small to see at all.
Grind that glass into a lens and the invisible snaps into focus. In 1676 a Dutch cloth merchant aimed one at pond water and saw 'animalcules' teeming — life too small to have ever been imagined.

Some of the swan-necked flasks Louis Pasteur shaped in the 1860s still sit clear and sterile in Paris more than 150 years later — left open to the air, the broth inside never spoiled, because the flask's curved neck kept airborne microbes out.
The realization that many diseases are caused by invisible living organisms that invade the body and multiply — not by bad air, imbalance, or fate.
Two centuries later, Pasteur and Koch proved those specks are no bystanders — they CAUSE the disease. After millennia of bad air and evil spirits, the enemy finally had a face.

The mold strain that produced most of the world's penicillin came from a single moldy cantaloupe found in a Peoria, Illinois market in 1943 — nearly all penicillin made since descends from that one melon's mold.
The first true antibiotic — a mold-made compound that kills bacteria while leaving human cells unharmed, turning death from infection into a choice.
Once you know the enemy is alive, you can hunt for something that kills it. A stray mold spore lands on a forgotten dish, clears a ring in the bacteria around it — and the age of dying from a scratch ends.
